Eleanor of Castile, Queen ConsortDeathHarby, Nottinghamshire, England [S187] Nov 28, 129049y
When Eleanor died, her husband King Edward I was so grief-stricken that he ordered a cross to be erected wherever her coffin stopped on the funeral procession. There were 11 Eleanor Crosses, the last of which gave Charing Cross its name. The total cost of the crosses was about 50,000 pounds, a fortune at the time.
